The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is designed to provide flexible and open education to a diverse group of learners.
Here are the eligibility criteria for enrolling in NIOS for Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) courses:
Eligibility for NIOS Secondary Course (Class 10):

Age Requirement:
- The candidate must be at least 14 years old as of July 31 of the year of admission. There is no upper age limit for admission.

Previous Education:
- There is no formal prerequisite qualification required to enroll in the Secondary course. However, the learner must have completed at least a Class 8 education.
- Alternatively, a self-declaration stating that the learner can read and write in the selected medium of instruction is also acceptable.
Eligibility for NIOS Senior Secondary Course (Class 12):

Age Requirement:
- The candidate must be at least 15 years old as of July 31 of the year of admission. There is no upper age limit for admission.

Previous Education:
- The learner must have passed the Secondary course (Class 10) from a recognized board, such as NIOS, CBSE, ICSE, or any state board. Proof of passing Class 10 is required at the time of admission.
General Eligibility Criteria:
- Indian Citizens and Foreign Nationals: Both Indian citizens and foreign nationals can apply. However, foreign nationals will have to pay higher fees.
- Special Needs: NIOS is open to learners with special needs or disabilities, providing them with flexible examination options and study materials.
- Working Professionals: Individuals who are working and wish to continue their education can also enroll in NIOS due to its flexible study patterns.
- Other Categories: This includes housewives, school dropouts, sportspersons, and individuals in rural areas who may not have access to formal schooling.

Transfer of Credit (TOC): Learners who have already completed certain subjects from recognized boards can apply for a Transfer of Credit (TOC) to carry forward their marks to the NIOS certificate.
