NIOS was established in 1989 with the aim of providing flexible and open schooling options to learners who cannot attend regular schools.
As a recognized national board, NIOS offers secondary (Class 10) and senior secondary (Class 12) education, as well as vocational courses. Its certificates are recognized for higher education and employment across India and in many countries abroad, just like certificates from other national boards such as CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and CISCE (Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations).
