The IITs do not conduct a specific "improvement exam" themselves. However, if you are looking to improve your Class 12 marks to meet the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced (such as the minimum required percentage), you can take an improvement exam through your Class 12 board.
Here’s how this works for IIT eligibility:
-
Board Improvement Exam: If your original Class 12 marks didn’t meet the minimum eligibility criteria (e.g., 75% or the top 20 percentile in your board), you can improve your marks by taking an improvement exam conducted by your respective board (like CBSE, NIOS, etc.).
-
Eligibility with Improvement Marks: IITs accept improvement marks to meet the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced, provided that:
- You take the improvement exam in the next academic year following your initial Class 12 attempt.
- If you take the improvement exam in all five subjects, your new mark sheet (the improvement mark sheet) will be considered in full.
- If you improve only some subjects, your eligibility may be assessed based on the highest marks from both your original and improvement exams for each subject.
-
Attempt Limits: Remember that you can attempt JEE Advanced only in the two consecutive years after your first Class 12 exam. For example, if you completed Class 12 in 2023, you can take JEE Advanced in 2023 and 2024 only. If your improvement exam falls within this timeframe, you are eligible.
-
Documentation for JEE Advanced: You will need to submit your improvement mark sheet alongside the original one during the application and counseling process for verification.
Improvement exams can therefore help students meet the minimum percentage requirement for JEE Advanced eligibility, but they need to be taken through the official board channels, as IITs themselves don’t offer these exams directly.
