Yes, a significant number of NIOS students do not pass all the subjects in one examination, but that does not mean NIOS is difficult.
The important point is that NIOS allows students multiple opportunities. At Secondary and Senior Secondary levels, NIOS also offers On-Demand Examinations, so a student who doesn't pass a subject can attempt it again rather than losing the entire opportunity.
What about the exact failure percentage?
NIOS's current result portal provides examination results for 2026 and previous years, but the publicly accessible current page does not give a simple overall "failure percentage" figure for the latest examinations.
So I would not give you a made-up percentage.
For passing, NIOS requires at least 33% marks at Senior Secondary level, with separate theory/practical requirements where applicable, and you need to pass the required number of subjects for certification.
In practical terms
If you:
- study the NIOS textbook,
- complete your TMA,
- solve previous-year papers,
- prepare important chapters,
- and practice regularly,
then passing NIOS is quite achievable.
